CBUG WORKING BEE - Sat 18th April 3pm onwards
Hi All,
CBUG (the Cairns Bicycle User Group) has identified a number of direct action projects that we would like to do over the next month or so, and are looking for helpers at a working bee on Saturday 18th April from 3pm, which will be followed by a BBQ.
Location - 17 Gordon St, Earlville, Cairns 4870 (south of Balaclava Rd from the roundabout)
Tasks include:
- Identifying, stripping and painting a 'ghost bike' to be used as a memorial to Dr Hossam El Shazly at the Trinity Beach roundabout. 'Ghost bikes' have been used extensively in the UK to mark the location of fatal bike accidents and are similar to white crosses that mark car accidents, just a white bike instead.
- Clear out Lenore's bike shed, which is full of all kinds of bike treasures. Anything you can use, Lenore will let you take home! Better than taking it to the dump. We can sort the bikes, frames, wheels etc into "ghost bikes", "for sale" and "dump" and possibly follow up with a garage sale the next day to raise funds for CBUG. Funds are needed for our other projects and on-going expenses.
- Brainstorm sticker slogans for a CBUG print run. Some ideas are at the bottom of this email to get you thinking!
- Put together signs to mark unsafe 'squeeze' points and other issues of concern to cyclists in Cairns.

Cairns Esplanade Festival of Sport 21 June 2009:

This sporting celebration is happening on Sunday 21 June 2009 and we are calling on you for your continued support in this popular community event. Festival 2009 will see the return of the Cycling Criterium and the Sports and Recreation Expo, along with our core events, the Fun Run, Coral Coast Triathlon, Ocean Swim and the Kids Triathlon.
A full day's activities will be followed by a prize ceremony in celebration of the participants and volunteers, topping off with a Community Concert.

CAFNEC - Wilderness Mountain Bike Ride 19-26 September 2009:
Hi everyone,
The Cairns and Far North Environment Centre (CAFNEC) is holding its Wilderness Bike Tour again this year after a break in 2008. This year the event will be held from the 19-26th September, and will go from Kennedy up to Blencoe Falls, and around through Mt Garnet across the Tablelands, and finish off down Coperlode Road into Cairns. This event is a fundraiser for CAFNEC and is reliant on the kind generosity off volunteers. We need help now, but also particularly in the weeks leading up to the event and during the event itself. Tasks include:
- organising and logistical support

- catering and kitchen
- camp set up and removal including services (toilets, power, water etc)
- bike support (mechanical, signage, water and food stops, rider support, first aid)
- vehicles and driver
